gary maclean at oro glasgow
Gary Maclean headed down to the newly named ORO Glasgow in the South Side on 23rd March, to give an insight into his spin on traditional Italian dishes. He created a five-course menu for the evening, with the help of the team at ORO Glasgow, which went down a treat!
Domenico Crolla, the owner of ORO Glasgow, watched Gary on Masterchef. He wondered what a guy like him would do if I had him in the kitchen for a night in ORO Glasgow? As it went well we’ll do it more often with some globally renowned chefs. I gave Gary a challenge to show me something different that will beat our already high standards.

I’m surprised by the reaction we’ve had already, we’ve not had a guest chef before. We will offer a five or six course tasting menu at 7pm for £48. We have tables of four, five, and six now available as our tables of two have all sold out. If it goes well we’ll do it more often with some globally renowned chefs. I’ve given Gary a challenge to show me something different that will beat our already high standards.”
Domenico explained to the Evening Times the reason behind the rebrand is: “Bella Napoli has moved on. It’s not Bella Napoli anymore. My dad created Bella Napoli as a cafe. Now it has become a generic name, I can’t really grow with it. There is a Bella Napoli in every city in the UK. People sometimes post photos online of places in Brazil with the same name. I’ve got plans to expand and I’ve always been told change the name. So, I’ve come up with ORO Glasgow which is reasonably unique and fitting for us. It suits our use of gold in the restaurant and in a world where every one is media savvy but can’t always spell, ORO Glasgow works.”
